Hello Rideau Banner

Hello Rideau Families!

Maatoomsii’Pookaiks (Children First) Indigenous Education PL Day

Our professional learning today centered on the importance of relationships and how we might reduce barriers to learner success. We practiced this by reviewing the teachings of the Indigenous Education Holistic Lifelong Learning Framework which examines spirit, heart, mind and body with each student at the centre. Knowing our students best is not simply about the checklist of tasks and assessments but also seeking to know who they are as individuals.

We also took time to explore spaces around Rideau Park School, namely “the ridge”, “the bridge” and “The Wandering Island”. Teachers practiced visual journalling techniques to learn how to invite students to notice deeply and carefully observe the land we call home. Journaling can benefit students of all ages; it helps to reduce barriers by allowing space for expression that might combine writing and drawing. Imagine how that can support a student who feels less confident as a writer (or artist) or is developing strength in the English language!

Our time together as a team is valuable and enriches the work we do for our students in the classroom.
