This week we welcomed additional teacher help to support our mandatory completion of the winter Kindergarten – Grade 3 Literacy and Numeracy Screening Assessments. Teachers at these grade levels are receiving blocks of release time to complete 1:1 assessment with students. It is important to note that information gleaned from these screeners is used to guide instruction and identify students that may require additional support. These screeners do not impact overall achievement reporting on report cards. If you have questions about these screeners, please contact your child’s teacher.
Family Literacy Week – January 26 to February 2, 2026
A strong early start in literacy development sets students up for success in their later years of education. To celebrate Family Literacy Week, the CBE Literacy & Early Learning Teams have shared ideas & resources to support key areas of literacy development that can be used at home or school. I would like to highlight a fantastic resource prepared by the CBE: The Digital Decodable Library, which is best suited to students with developing reading skills: https://sites.google.com/educbe.ca/cbe-decodable-digital-library. This resource provides texts with “decodable” words, that is, words with sounds and letters that students recognize, at their level.
I would also like to take this time to thank grade 1/2 teachers Ms. Lindsay Bliek and Ms. Emily Dockrill for hosting a Family Literacy Night this past Wednesday evening. Attendees were treated to an engaging talk about emerging literacy skills and how to best support reading practice at home.
Provincial Achievement Tests (PAT) May – June 2026
To support planning ahead, we would like to share PAT examination dates that will impact students in grades 6 and 9. Please know that these times are mandated provincially and are not individually scheduled by schools. All students are provided with up to double the official scheduled time as noted below. More information about PATs will be provided to students and families in grade 6 and 9 as we approach these dates.

Are your fees up to date?
We kindly ask that you take a moment to review your account in SchoolEngage as there may be outstanding fees that remain on file. Please know that partial payments can be made throughout the school year. Keeping your fees up to date helps us to work within our resources and maintain optimal programming for students at Rideau Park School. If you require further support or have questions, please contact Ms. Janzen directly at FAJanzen@cbe.ab.ca
Early pick ups at the office – It’s a challenge!
We notice that our office staff becomes incredibly busy with families calling or arriving to pick up students early as we approach our dismissal time at 3:49pm (Mon-Thu). We kindly ask that if you need to pick up your child early, please do so no later than between 3:00pm-3:20pm. It is increasingly challenging to manage communication of unplanned early pickups within minutes of our actual dismissal time. In those cases, we kindly ask that you wait for your child to complete class and pick them up outside. As always, communicating your plans ahead of time can help us to locate your child sooner and have them ready for you at the office.
